The Emerald Hymnal (aka 緑の賛美歌, or "Midori no Sanbika") is a collection of passionate love songs, inspired by many different relationships. They form a song cycle akin to Dante's Purgatorio, reaching closer to Paradise with every song.
The variety in this songbook is a stark contrast to the monolithic sorrow of The Black Hymnal. The contents of The Emerald Hymnal were also written over the course of seven years (2017-2024).
These songs deal with long-distance relationships, traveling to unknown worlds, intense rivalries, love triangles, retribution, closure, moving on from grief, falling in love again, and more. The songs re-approach the mythos of the first Hymnal from a more critical angle, having buried the characters of the first book for a new cast.
Some of the recurring themes explored are: how language affects reality, how technology affects relationships, the limitations of language, the power of belief, the fine line between friends and enemies, alchemical symbolism, wintry landscapes, and a plethora of subtle religious motifs and metaphors.
