Dylan's Web Log

Well, How Did I Get Here?

November 22, 2024

Hello. It's Dylan. I'm currently designing a new site (new CSS coming soon). You can view my old site here.

I want this new site to focus strictly on my music and poetry. You can still find my games and software on my old site, but my priorities have changed as of late.

I spent +20 years making games and I'm glad to be done. I made most of the games I want to make, and I'm glad to be moving away from those toxic communities. I no longer vibe with people in the video game scenes.

Now I'm mainly focused on writing and sharing new music. This new site should be great for that. I plan to just upload new mp3s here, rather than linking to some megalithic sites like bandcamp or youtube (at least until I have a new album finished).

My Scattered Music Catalogue

I already have a large discography of various styles, but I'd like to consolidate them into a more consistent output. I have far too many peripheral "side-project" albums and not enough mainline ones.

So far, I have only two "main" albums, and they're both instrumental (Mirrors for Princes, Naked). Meanwhile I have about ten albums from various side-projects, for a total of twelve albums. It's a mess genre-wise, my output has been all over the place. It's like having too many mixtapes.

So, I have two cover albums and a remix album that are only available on itch.io, because bandcamp got weird about covers/remixes in 2022. There's a second remix album of my own works. I also have a live album I recorded with my father.

Additionally, I have five soundtrack albums released under my moniker "Icy-la-Belle" ... though I love the music, I associate it so much with the grind of developing video games that some of my early VG music gives me anxiety. Though it's probably more from the cyberbullying I endured than the actual grind of working.

So if this seems like a confusing mess ... exactly. The point is a lot of these experiments have led to a dead end. I don't enjoy writing VG music anymore. Covers and remixes can be too legally obnoxious to release officially (on my budget at least). So that leaves original music... which I've learned I'm on my own with.

I don't want to bury my old music completely. I just want to put it all behind me and start over.

Tentative Plans

My "Cupid" album will be my last instrumental album in 2025, which will complete my collection of 13 early albums. Then I'm going to try to pivot to more traditional songwriting from there. So expect to hear some new music soon.

I may upload some recent covers here too. I prefer being able to share directly through here. It reminds me of a more independent era of the internet.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading! I'll have more updates soon. - Dylan
